THE ESSENTIALS
Are you looking for help to pay your rent in Brussels? The rent allowance is here for that! It’s a monthly financial aid from the Brussels-Capital Region. It’s for young people and older who are waiting for social housing and have modest incomes.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
For the year 2026, here are the conditions and amounts for the rent allowance in Brussels:
Who’s eligible?
- You must be domiciled in the Brussels-Capital Region.
- You must be on a waiting list for social housing with a Public Service Real Estate Company (SISP).
- No member of your household should own real estate.
- Your current home must be rented with a primary residence contract.
- Your home must not be rented by a Social Real Estate Agency (AIS) or a SISP, and must not belong to a family member up to the second degree.
- You cannot combine this allowance with other rent aids.
Annual income ceilings (for an application in 2026, based on 2023 income – tax year 2024):
- Single person: your income must not exceed €16,408.11 per year.
- Other households (multiple people): your income must not exceed €22,174.69 per year.

The allowance is granted for 5 years and can be renewed if you still meet the conditions.
HOW TO APPLY
Here are the steps to apply for the rent allowance:
- Make sure you meet all the conditions mentioned above.
- Download the rent allowance application form from the Bruxelles Logement website.
- Fill out the form carefully with all the requested information.
- Gather all necessary documents (household composition, proof of income, rental agreement, SISP registration certificate, etc.).
- Send your complete file by registered mail or submit it against acknowledgment of receipt.
- You can also submit your application online via the IrisBox platform.
- After receiving your complete file, it takes 2 to 4 months to get a decision. The aid will take effect on the first day of the month following the favorable decision, with no retroactive effect.
THE PITFALLS
- Not being registered with SISP: If you are not on a waiting list for social housing with a SISP, your application will be refused. A simple application to a commune or a CPAS is not enough.
- Exceeding income ceilings: If your income exceeds the set thresholds, you will not be entitled to the allowance.
- Forgetting documents: An incomplete file can delay the processing of your application, or even lead to its rejection.
- Being a homeowner: If a member of your household owns real estate, you will not be eligible.
- Making a false declaration: If you provide false information, your application will be canceled and if you already have social housing, your lease could be terminated.
